President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov met with participants of the meeting of Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states, at Oqsaroy on May 22.
“The current meeting of CFM has been the last in its series [during Uzbekistan’s presidency in the Organization] and thus it sums up all the preparatory work, and identifies the documents to be included in the agenda of the forthcoming Summit. Signing of these documents will make a worthwhile input into SCO’s development and boosting its prestige”, President Islam Karimov said.
During the talk at Oqsaroy, the preparation course for the impending meeting of SCO Council of Heads of State in Tashkent has been discussed. So have pressing issues of consolidating regional security, including those related to establishing peace and harmony in Kyrgyzstan, settling the situation in the neighboring Afghanistan through nonmilitary means and promoting assistance to rebuild its economy.
Head of our nation stressed the need to refine and further improve the decision-making mechanisms by SCO’s various agencies. Heads of delegations, in their turn, highlighted the particular significance of our nation’s efforts in further enhancing the SCO’s standing, expanding the scales of economic cooperation in Central Asia.
As the guests stated, Uzbekistan’s pro-active position in defining the development strategy of both the SCO and on a wide spectrum of contemporary world politics in general, has been yielding tangible effects. A critical product of our country’s chairmanship in this influential international institution have been the UN General Assembly’s unanimously approved Resolution on Cooperation between the UN and SCO as well as the Joint Declaration on Cooperation between secretariats of these organizations. These documents set out the legal framework and prospects for practical interaction between them.
Heads of delegations from foreign ministries of SCO member states thanked the President of Uzbekistan for the warm welcome and expressed confidence that the forthcoming SCO Summit in Tashkent will be held at the highest level.
