President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov met with Yang Jiechi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), at Oqsaroy, May 21.
Greeting the guest, the head of our state said in particular, “We highly appreciate the attention and significance placed by the People’s Republic of China at the activity of SCO [Shanghai Cooperation Organization]. The international standing and such an extensive participation of Your country in the forthcoming occasion in Tashkent will help consolidate to a remarkable extent the role and influence of the Organization in the contemporary system of world politics”.
In his turn, the guest said, “We in China regard You with high respect as a great politician of modern times. People of Uzbekistan have made tremendous strides in building an independent nation precisely under Your leadership. Together with President Hu Jintao, You have raised the Uzbek-Chinese relations to a qualitatively new level”.
Today, bilateral relations between our nations have been progressing in the spirit of traditional friendship and partnership, and cover a wide range of issues in investment, trade-economic, energy, transport and communications areas. In many dimensions of cooperation, positions of our countries match on bilateral as well as multilateral levels in issues related to joint counteraction of any manifestation of terrorism, extremism, separatism, drug smuggling, illegal arms trade, and other threats and challenges to regional and international security. The issues are thereto defined as key ones in the Charter of Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
Trade and economic relations between Uzbekistan and China have been distinct with a particular level of development within the most-favored-nation regime in force since 1994 on equal terms. The PRC has firmly established itself as one of the leading trade partners of our nation.
During the meeting at Oqsaroy, Yang Jiechi expressed his earnest gratitude to President Islam Karimov for the warm welcome, stressing in particular SCO’s stronger than ever a role in the international arena owing to the efforts of our nation’s leadership made in the course of its presidency in the Organization.
Prospects to further expand mutual cooperation have been discussed at the occasion, so has preparatory work for the upcoming state visit by President of PRC Hu Jintao to the Republic of Uzbekistan.
